Swim Course

The BoneIslandTri swim course will be staged at Smathers Beach on the beach for the full swim and for the half swim.  BoneIslandTri will feature a mass beach start for the full and a wave start for the half. The swim takes place along the coast of Key West in the Atlantic Ocean.  The course will be a 2.4 mile(full) and 1.2 mile(half) course.  The water temperature will be in the upper 60's to low 70's - perfect for wetsuit use. The waters of Key West are typically crystal-clear and the swim will begin on a sandy beach and end exiting the water from a sandy smooth bottom onto padded steps at the pier on Higgs Beach where wetsuit strippers and fresh water showers will be provided overhead as the competitors run from the pier to the transition area.  Half Iron distance athletes will begin at 8:00AM in order to allow the full athletes to be well past the start line for the half.

Cut-Off Time (Full): 2 hours 20 minutes
Cut-Off Time (Half): 1 hour 00 minutes

Bike Course

The bike course is at sea level and "pancake flat" with the only elevation changes taking place when participants cross the multiple bridges along the course.  We are working with the local authorities to make some slight changes to the course in 2014 based on our learning from the 2013 event and the desire to improve the course.  We have really good feedback from both the Sheriff's Office and the participants.  Stay tuned for the updates however, in the meantime, here is the 2013 setup that was used: The 112 mile(full) and 56 mile(half) bike course takes competitors from T/A at Higgs Beach, North along Atlantic Blvd and then North along South Roosevelt Blvd to US-1 where they will travel North along US-1 to Middle Torch Key. Competitors will travel out Middle Torch Rd about one tenth of a mile off of US-1 where they will make a U-turn to head South again.  The Half Athletes will make their turnaround and return all the way to T/A. The Full Athletes will head southbound until they get to Blimp Rd where they will complete two laps, collecting bracelets for each lap.  The full distance athletes will then travel South to Boca Chica Key where they will turn North again using the underpass to complete a second lap of the first Northbound lap including Blimp Rd for a second time. Vehicular traffic on the bike course will be light with the exception of US-1 where competitors will be traveling on the generous shoulders of US-1 with moderate traffic levels passing by on their left.  Competitors will be following the "Rules of the Road" while competing in BoneIslandTri. Fully stocked aid stations will be located approximately every 15 miles along the entire course. For the full, a "Special Needs" stop will also be located at about the midpoint of the ride so there will be plenty of support.

Cut-Off Time (Full): 10 hours 00 minutes cumulative from start of swim
Cut-Off Time (Half): 5 hours 00 minutes cumulative from start of swim

Run Course

Again the info that follows is the year one 2013 course.  We have great feedback for the course and are also hoping to incorporate more of the World-Famous Key West Downtown area into the event for year two!  Stay tuned and we will update this section as the information becomes available.  2013: The three lap(full) and two lap(half), looping, run course will start at Higgs Beach and pas through the busy sections of the World-famous Duval Street amongst a cheering crowd of tourists and locals enjoying the heart of the Key West downtown scene before finishing at the Truman Waterfront Park.  Each Lap will be tracked by having athletes collect a wristband.  Competitors will go out White Street Pier, pass by the Southernmost Point of the Continental United States, and enjoy a nearly continuous beach scene on each pass of the course.  Each lap of the run will also feature a trip along Smathers Beach on South Roosevelt Blvd and will pass near the historic Slave Memorial at Higgs Beach as well.  One of the featured aspects of BoneIslandTri will be the run down Duval Street.  Additionally, the course will be mostly off of the streets prior to the Duval Street Leg making it a great venue for facilitating aid stations and spectators.  Each aid station will serve a variety of food, drinks, and energy products to assist each athlete.  Like Beach2battleship, BoneIslandTri organizers will be conducting a contest amongst the aid stations (voted on by the participants), so each group or company assigned to a particular aid station will be trying their best to "out do" the other aid stations.  Aid station volunteers will be in costume and will be playing music and doing whatever they can to cheer you on.  The run course will also be fully covered with EMS personnel, business band radio operators, and port-a-lets. Being that many competitors will still be out on the run course after the sun sets at about 6PM, most of the run course will be lit by existing street lights but, wherever the need exists, portable light towers will be used to light the course for competitors.  In addition, the organizers plan to provide glow-in-the-dark items for athletes still out on course after dark.

Cut-Off Time (Full): 17 hours 00 minutes cumulative from start of swim
Cut-Off Time (Full):All athletes must be on second half of the run no later than 8:30PM (or 13 1/2 hours after the start of the swim)
Cut-Off Time (Half): 9 hours 00 minutes cumulative from start of swim
